Mar 16,2015

At the Jamaica Observer offices, located on Beechwood Avenue situated in St Andrew, an estimated 500 people turned up. This attendance was in response to new skills in different positions in the Sandals Resorts, both locally as well as internationally. The job fair which actually started at 9 a.m, already saw crowds of people two hours earlier, with their resumes to face the challenges.

There were people who at the end of the say, left home smiling, were sent back empty-handed due to lack of experience or did not qualify the 20-minute written exam only. According to the human resource director, Sandals group, Ingrid Emmons said that this job fair was a way of reaching out to a wide group of people. He said that this was the first employment fair to be held in Jamaica and if it turned out to be successful, they would have another one on a quarterly basis or at least twice in a year.

Emmons said that the purpose behind conducting the job fair recruitment was to set aside the candidates who were talented, even if there may not be job vacancies for all. This pipeline of skilled individuals would soon get opportunities by the head of departments. For those persons who lacked work experience but were talented, such individuals were given a chance to get involved in the Hospitality Trainee Program conducted by the group. It would involve six weeks of intensified training, after which they would again have the opportunity to apply for such positions.

While this was the first job fair of its kind held at Sandals in Jamaica, a similar one was held in Grenada an year or so earlier and also one in Barbados during the latter part of the year. The fair at Barbados witness almost 5,000 people applied for 500 open positions.
