The Financial Accounting & Reporting unit is accountable for ensuring the accuracy of the university’s financial information and is therefore accountable for providing the overall direction, planning and coordination necessary for an accurate, strategic and efficient financial accounting and reporting environment.  To achieve its accountabilities, the unit has a significant role in developing and maintaining the university’s financial framework which includes: chart of accounts, internal financial reporting, financial controls, financial systems, internal documentation, Guide to Financial Management (Guide), financial University of Alberta Policies and Procedures (UAPPOL).

The unit supports the university’s planning and decision-making process and operational reporting needs by providing a team of professionals who offer leadership, consultation and support in the areas of financial accounting and reporting, financial analysis, procedure/policy development and financial controls.

The unit is responsible for the preparation of the University’s annual audited consolidated financial statements. The University of Alberta is a complex financial statement reporting environment. The University prepares its financial statements in accordance with Canadian Public Sector accounting Standards (PSAS). The University’s consolidated financial statements are consolidated into the Government of Alberta – Ministry of Advanced Education’s consolidated financial statements.

This Senior Financial Accountant position is one of five reporting to the Chief Accountant & Associate Director.

Key unit responsibilities are:

Preparation of the university’s annual audited financial statements
Preparation of numerous other external institutional financial reporting requirements and internal financial reporting to senior management and board committees
Research and prepare accounting issues position papers
Prepare analysis, working papers, reasonability assessments
Preparation of institutional accounting journal entries  (e.g. tangible capital assets, portfolio investments)
General Ledger business owner (administration and controls)
Maintain the chart of accounts, reporting trees and internal financial reporting templates (nVision)
Assess the adequacy of financial controls
Coordinate the Auditor General consolidated financial statement audits
Coordinate the year end and quarter end financial schedules
All Senior Financial Accountants are responsible for the following:

Support the financial statement process by providing the analysis, working papers, audit requirements, reasonability assessments
Keep current with relevant developments and trends in the accounting profession. Perform analysis, develop positon papers on new/changes to PSAS standards or when issues arise (including recommendations and implementation plans)
Identify where improvements can be made and implement improvements to:
Accuracy of financial reporting
Financial accounting and reporting processes
Financial controls
Develop and maintain documentation
Provide consultative or other assistance to other units/stakeholders
The Financial Accounting and Reporting unit is a flexible team-based environment.  Each SFA is assigned specific responsibility areas (expertize areas).  Other areas of work will be assigned and are dependent upon capacity of position as well as other unit initiatives and priorities.

The specific responsibilities and areas of expertise assigned to this Senior Financial Accountant positon include:

Accounting, financial reporting and analysis for the university’s investments and endowments
Developing and maintaining an accurate and efficient journal entry environment with the appropriate levels of financial control
The successful candidate will have:

CPA professional accounting designation and a related University degree
10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in a large organization with at least 5 years’ experience in a financial accounting and reporting role
High level of proficiency in Excel, data base query tools
Experience with PeopleSoft Financials and Caseware is an asset
Demonstrated initiative and judgement
Attention to detail and produce accurate results
Strong planning, organizational and time management skills and an ability to work to deadlines
Excellent research and analytical skills
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to write documentation for various levels of users
